The book is illustrated by Jane's accounts of her experiences and those of her husband Rob, the artist Robert F. Butts. It was while trying out the exercises that Seth contacted Jane for the first time. Throughout the book, she gives quotations from his earliest communications. Jane encourages readers to enter their own dreams in a daily journal to help them examine how their sleeping mind continues to function, resolving problems, and sparking waking creativity.

JANE ROBERTS The Seth Material (1970)
The first popular Seth/Jane book, this is an account of how Seth first appeared in the lives of Jane and Rob; it contains their doubts, self-questionings, and tests of him. Excerpts from their early sessions with him sketch the outlines of the world view that he was shortly to present more fully in his own works.

SETH-DICTATED BOOK - Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul (1972)
The first full-scale "Seth book." In it Seth describes the multidimensional nature of the human personality, with its untapped resources, its range in time and space, its connections with all aspects of the universe, and the continuity of consciousness. He discusses in-depth his reality today, and how it compares to physical life. Transcribed and edited by Robert Butts, Jane's husband.

JANE ROBERTS The Education of Oversoul Seven (1973)
Now republished as part of the Oversoul Seven Trilogy
This novel was written by Jane in a state of altered consciousness. Seth's concept of the time-and-space-free personality is developed in a lively and entertaining story.

SETH-DICTATED BOOK - The Nature of Personal Reality: A Seth Book (1974)
Seth's second book. A prerequisite to any further study of the Seth material. In it Seth offers an expanded view of how our bodies constantly recreate themselves, and how the events in our lives are created in line with conscious beliefs and suggestions. Seth also suggests many techniques and exercises for applying the concept of the time-and space-free human personality to whatever difficulti es in which we may find ourselves.

JANE ROBERTS Adventures in Consciousness: An Introduction to Aspect Psychology(1975)
The first part of this book consists of Jane's account of her increased awareness of some of the aspects of her greater self, together with similar discoveries on the part of members of the ESP class that she held every Tuesday night in her home from 1967 to 1975. The second part of the book is her explanation of these paranormal happenings according to Seth's ideas and her ow n intuitions. Helpful diagrams by Rob Butts.

JANE ROBERTS Dialogues of the Soul and Mortal Self in Time* (1975)
The poems in this volume are a moving presentation of Jane's inner conflict between her knowledge that her body must decay, and her sense of living in eternity. Powerful illustrations by Rob.

JANE ROBERTS Psychic Politics: An Aspect Psychology Book (1976)
A sequel to Adventures, this book by Jane relates more of her encounters with her greater self, as well as similar experiences on the part of Rob and individuals with whom they come in contact. Explaining these events are the Codicils, a statement of the rules which underlie the evolvement of their personality and our species--written by Jane in a state of altered consciousness.

JANE ROBERTS The World View of Paul Cezanne (1977)
The current and remarkably Sethian outlook on the world of the artist Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) is presented in this book in words of his received by Jane while in a state of altered consciousness.

SETH-DICTATED BOOK The "Unknown" Reality, Volumes I & II (1977/1979)
Seth's third and fourth books. They offer a fuller explanation of the "unknown" dimensions of ourselves, with exercises that can help us become more familiar with them and thus enrich both our lives and the world in which we live. Cross-references to other of Seth's writings plus extensive annotation by Rob.

JANE ROBERTS The Afterdeath Journal of an American Philosopher: The World View of William James* (1978)
This book presents the world view of the philosopher William James (1842-1910) as he has developed it since he left his body. He comments on the limitations of his outlook when in our reality, analyzes U.S. cultural development in the light of what he has discovered since his "death," and describes the reality in which he is now focused. His account of "God," whom he refers to as the "the knowing light" is deeply moving. This work is one of Jane's productions while in a state of altered consciousness.

JANE ROBERTS Emir's Education in the Proper Use of Magical Powers (1979)
This children's book is also suitable for adults. It shows our need to make self-responsible decisions, the value of the change of seasons and the change called death, and the oneness of creation. A young prince learns as he journeys through the universe.

JANE ROBERTS The Further Education of Oversoul Seven (1979)
Now republished as part of the Oversoul Seven Trilogy and a sequel to The Education of Oversoul Seven, this novel was also written by Jane when in a state of altered consciousness. The concepts of simultaneous time, probable realities, the power of an individual's free choice, and the nature of "God" are explored in a lively fashion as the characters become acquainted with their counterparts in space and time.

SETH-DICTATED BOOK The Nature of the Psyche: Its Human Expression (1979)
Seth's fifth book. Who "I" am is explained through a discussion of the mobility of consciousness as distinct from the body. Our relationships with other people--including sexual relationships--are explored as ways in which we can develop fully. Exercises are suggested to assist the reader to experience the concepts. Seth stresses the power of the individual to choose whether to participate in mass decisions or to follow a separate course. The key to this transformation is contained in the "Codicils," principles of conduct that are presented in her previous work, Psychic Politics.

JANE ROBERTS Seth, Dreams and Projection of Consciousness (1986)
Written between The Seth Material and Seth Speaks but not published until 1986, this book by Jane fills in the chronological gap between those two works. In it, she relates her experiences and experiments with dreams and projection of consciousness, and gives much advice from both Seth and herself about working with one's dreams and engaging in out-of-body travel. The Introduction by Rob Butts describes the circumstances surrounding Jane's death of September 5, 1984.

SETH-DICTATED BOOK Dreams, "Evolution," and Value Fulfillment, Volumes I & II (1986)
These seventh and eighth Seth books recount the "evolution" of material reality moment by moment from the dream state into its manifestation as our physical environment. Seth also describes the goal towards which each aspect of the whole of All That Is is working: value fulfillment. As in previous Seth books, Robert Butts provides notes and commentaries. His Introductory Essays give an account of Jane's final illness and the reasons for the immense physical difficulties which she suffered.

SETH-DICTATED BOOK The Magical Approach (1995)
Dictated by Seth in 1980, this sessies of sessions was gathered into publication form by Rob Butts approximately 10 years after Jane's death. The sessions were given by Seth in an effort to help Jane tap into her ability to heal herself. He urges her (and all of us) to adopt a mindset more in keeping with natural inclinations, and calls this approach the "magical" one as compared to the usual rational one used in our society. Seth encourages us to listen to our inner voices, to heed our impulses, to live spontaneously, and to focus with intent and joyful expectation on what we desire to bring into our lives. A classic example of Seth's perspective, this book is a welcome addition to his reality creation material. Includes artwork by Rob.

SETH-DICTATED BOOK The Way Toward Health (1997)
The last of the Seth-dictated books, it was written from Jane's hospital bed over the months preceding her death. The material in this book was evoked by the questions and considerations Jane and Rob faced during her long illness, and becomes an in-depth examination of the miracle of life in the human body. It also becomes the poignant story of Jane's courageous attempt to understand the crippling condition she had contracted and see the role it played in her life.

The Nine Families of Consciousness

The Nine Families of Consciousness

Compiled by Paul M. There are also psychic counterparts of races – families of consciousness, so to speak – all related, yet having different overall characteristics or specialties.” [session 732]

Seth describes eight of these families (all except Sumari which he covers in greater detail earlier), in sessions 736 - 737.

More information on Sumari can be found in Jane Roberts’s Adventures in Consciousness, The Nature of Personal Reality, Psychic Politics, Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment, Vol. 1 and 2, and Sue Watkins’s Conversations With Seth, Vol. 1 ,and 2.

[ Go to the top ]

Is the Concept of “Families” Really Discrete?

Jane said:

“We regard Seth’s material on counterparts and families of consciousness as excellent explanations – as thematic frameworks that help us perceive and organize aspects of our greater reality that are ignored by conventional academic disciplines. Seth’s explanations stand for aspects of reality that usually escape us.” [Rob’s notes, session 737]

To further understand the concept of “families” try to imagine the psychic reality of the collective consciousness; sort of like the science fiction species – the Borg – from the TV series Star Trek. But imagine that this human collective is psychically related and holds the ability to communicate telepathically and clairvoyantly. Next, try to imagine the reality of six billion human beings as individuals that make up this vast group. If you were to think of this group, figuratively speaking, as a Rainbow of Consciousness, then each discrete color would represent an innate “family” leaning or intent. When viewing this Rainbow from afar, you can’t find the exact place where red ends and orange begins, yet you can clearly distinguish both colors. As your vision zooms in each color also reveals infinite shades of gradation and the edges, that seemed separate from a longer distance, literally disappear. So the foundation of nine can easily be extended into an infinite spectrum with plenty of room for individual variations. Therefore, we really aren’t limited to nine discrete “colors”.

Another way of looking at it is to multiply 9x8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1. You get 362,880 whole number permutations. So there’s plenty of room to explore a rich variety from the fundamental nine. And if you think of these “families” of consciousness in terms of human energy – frequency and personality tone – you get a sense of just how wide and vast this spectrum of consciousness really is.

The concepts of counterparts and nine “families” introduce an important foundation for the deeper understanding of this vast spectrum of human consciousness in relationship to its nonphysical source. And just because something is nonphysical or “beneath” the normal range of our five senses doesn’t mean that it’s not real! We need to remind ourselves, again, that these concepts are not absolutes offered in some type of mathematical language or philosophical dialectic based upon the pure reason of the five senses. They must be experienced, conceptualized to be more fully understood. And the gateway to this type of conceptualization is to be found by looking “inward” through our own intuitive, subjective perception by means of our own inner senses.

Here are some additional excerpts from Jane Roberts on counterparts and the nine “families” that shed some light on these related concepts.

“Now it seems so obvious that there must be such alliances as Seth’s families of consciousness, and that each of us alive at any given time takes part in one or more of such psychic groupings – just as we form, say, nationalistic affiliations on ordinary levels.

“But the names and designations aren’t meant to be taken too literally; these aren’t to be interpreted as esoteric clubs or brotherhoods, but as natural psychic ‘conglomerations’ to which we all belong.” [session 737]

That last paragraph serves as a very important reminder that it’s all to easy to limit our thinking to nine “clubs” that we can now belong to, using this as yet another means to separate and promote our individuality. In fact, you will discover that this is the first stage that people usually go through when first introduced to the idea. Instead, we need to remind ourselves that the primary “club” we belong to is humanity, and even that distinction will need to blur when we encounter new races in other solar systems and galaxies. So we should afford ourselves the same luxury when identifying with any of the nine family intents.

Now according to Seth, Rob, Jane, and many of their students belonged to the Sumari “family” of consciousness, the very first one introduced:

“Now these families fall generally into certain groups. In greater terms you can ‘cut the pie’ however you want to, but you will still share an emotional and psychic feeling of belonging with the family of which you are a part. And (with broad amusement) most of you here are Sumari, and it demands great discipline of Sumari to take down lists – even of psychic families.” [Appendix 26, session 734]

That last sentence offers a very important clue about Seth’s agenda in offering this information. I have to admit that I felt an initial resistance to the validity of this concept when I first read it in 1979. And in my subsequent experiences and explorations of this particular concept I have discovered that many people share this initial aversion. I mean really, nine families? Not seven? Or sixteen? How can our collective psyches, something that is surely infinite, be expressed in such discrete terms?

I’m reminded of that Monty Python moment from The Search for the Holy Grail in which they explain the use of “the holy hand grenade of Antioch” as a metaphor for the manner in which the original intent of a religious or mystical experience inevitably gets distorted into calcified dogma. When pulling the pin to detonate the holy hand grenade, “the number to count before releasing shall be three, not two, not four, and five is right out!”

Laughing out loud! But seriously, just what is really going on here!? Seth says that you can cut the proverbial pie – of consciousness – any way you wish. And it’s a pretty vast pie that we’re dealing with here. So it’s clear that this is Seth’s best attempt at explaining these very subtle and exceedingly complex ideas within the limits of our linear-based language that reflect nonlinear perception in Framework 2 again. And it takes time to reconcile nonlinear perception into a mind that is culturally habituated to linear thinking and perception.

Even Rob and Jane experienced some initial skepticism with Seth seeming to be so discrete in terms of nine “families”:

“I told [Jane] I’d been rather surprised when Seth had so boldly stated that there were only nine families of (human) consciousness upon our planet. The number seemed too small, too arbitrary. I also remarked upon my understanding that usually neither she nor Seth liked to categorize new information so definitely. Jane, while agreeing, couldn’t elaborate upon this very much, beyond saying that she felt each family could have subdivisions and/or combine with others, so that mathematically at least there existed the possibility of ‘a lot’ of them. I liked that idea much better. Strangely, neither of us had ever asked Seth to name any of the other families of consciousness, following Jane’s Sumari breakthrough some three years ago.” [session 732, notes during break at 10:45]

A reminder from Seth:

“Now these categories do not come first. Your individuality comes first. You have certain characteristics of your own. These place you in a certain position. As you are not a rock or a mineral, but a person, so your individuality places you in a particular family or species of consciousness. This represents your overall viewpoint of reality.” [session 732]

It’s important to remember that our individuality – our own innate intent – precedes, so to speak, any physical incarnations. So our unique intent within nonphysical consciousness, our source consciousness, does express itself through the choice of entering into an incarnational “cycle.” This choice occurs in a nonphysical state which is somewhat beyond the scope of this essay. But the main point here is that once the choice is made and the “cycle” manifests, our pre-existing intent then gets translated through the filter of this nine “families” concept into all of the personalities that manifest and participate in the physical Framework 1 experience. Seems pretty simple.

Therefore, the nine “families” concept is most importantly about the innate intention of consciousness. And by intentions we mean a predisposition to being a healer, scientist, artist, parent, soldier, shaman, teacher, entrepreneur, etc. And within the principle of value fulfillment, it’s clear that these innate intents must complement each other in such a way as to create a propensity for equilibrium, balance, and healthy communities and ecosystems. So the nine “families” of consciousness is just Seth’s way of presenting a concept that hints at the innate intention toward value fulfillment of the collective human consciousness, our inner egos, whose source is found in the “unknown” reality of Frameworks 2, 3, 4, and inward.

[ Go to the top ]

Family Subgroupings

Seth said,

“Now you can expand the functions of any particular family group, or you can cut it down, by deciding how precise you want to be. If one family deals with the nature of healing then you can slice it down to the healing of a toe … and ear … an eye.

“The categories [healing, teaching, or whatever] are general descriptions of the families of consciousness. You can split them up also and make further distinction if you choose. You cut those divisions down. They merely represent interpretations that you can understand in you realty. In the most mundane terms, some families are travelers, and some prefer to say at home. But generally speaking I have simply given you an outline which follow the characteristics of consciousness as it is embarked in physical form. I am mot giving you these groups to set up divisions, but to help you understand that consciousness is diversified – that usually each of you falls, because you want to, into a certain family. And there you acquire friends, alliances and counterparts.”

Sue Watkins, former ESP class member, family friend, and author tuned into the Grunaargh family, a sub-group of Gramada during session 598. From her note to Rob:

“In a session on Sumari I witnessed in 1971 or early 1972 – I picked up a family-of-consciousness name, and Seth said it was ‘Grunaargh.’ It wasn’t on the list given last month [referring to the nine families given in session 732].”

Rob comments,

“Sue had picked up on the Grunaargh during the 598th session, which she’d recorded for me the evening after Jane had made the whole Sumari break through in [ESP class], on November 23, 1971.

“The point I want to make here is that others beside Jane can intuitively divine material on the families’ of consciousness. And you can express it against yourself in terms of physical symptoms, or in your relationship with others. But if you realize it is nothing to be frightened of, then you are free of it.

Hate is, as I have said before, like a summer storm. When you let it go, it lets forth energy and rain that heals the earth. It is turned into quite constructive framework—it is good and natural.' sky would never think of holding back its storm—again, it has better sense.

Do not fear negative thoughts. That simply adds to what you consider negative energy. Where would the world be without thunderstorms, and even floods, and hurricanes, and earthquakes? That is how the earth changes and renews itself. To deny your emotions, any of them, is denying the aspect of your own reality, an it is, literally, impossible.

Let it go and no one will be hurt. The universe is not afraid of your hatred. It can hold it easily. There is no one point of perfection. When you think you have an enemy, you simply begin to focus upon the distances that exist between what you think the enemy is, and what your love tells you the enemy should be. But because you think hate is so wrong, you then do not focus upon the similarities between your enemy and the love that is involved. You are blind, for example, to his good points, and focus instead upon those qualities that separate you from what you think he should be and what he is.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 26

To some extent, yes. Now when you love someone, you are able to see what you think of, or feel, or interpret, as the ideal. You are also aware of the separations from that ideal. Now you may also however, because of your identification, see in the other person your own ideal of yourself, and then perceive, as they seem to fall in their behavior from your ideal pattern, also your own failures, and be twice as angry, because it seems to you they are failing for themselves and for you.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 25

When a child says to a parent, "I hate you," often the parent is appalled. The parent says, "You should not say hate," or, "That is bad," and the child quickly learns not to be so honest!

Now this is from my book.*(THE NATURE OF PERSONAL REALITY) But what the child is saying: "I love you so much, and I sense this great love. What separates me from it now, and how can I return to it, and what has happened, and what is wrong?" And hate operates in the same manner, regardless of your age and the personalities involved. And if you are taught to believe it is wrong, it is then more difficult to get back to love because you begin to inhibit the feeling.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 24

You are here because you are beginning to believe in the freedom of yourself, and in your own integrity. You are ready to sit and listen to someone who says, "Look into your self—know your self," and who, at least, will help you do so.

Now, in your terms I have some very good points to say for me, and yet some liabilities. After all, you have bodies that you have to live in every day, and what you think of as intimate personal problems that go on all the time. On the other hand, because I am not physically focused, I have the time, the energy, and the inclination to travel in other realms, and tell you about what goodies I can bring back.

But I always remind you that in whatever terms you think, your consciousness is your own. Your abilities are your own, and those realities that I know are not necessarily yours. I will travel in my own way through reality, and you will travel through your own way in reality.

Now, listen! In a manner of speaking now, and as an analogy, you are entities to the molecules within you. In your terms, they send you out into realities of sensation and dimension that they cannot understand.

You make a conscious decision to drive a car, or not to drive a car. The molecules within you do not know what a car is. Yet your ability to drive that car is dependent upon the existence of those atoms and molecules. Yet, for them, you go out into a reality that they do not know. They join their reality with yours, and theirs is vivid and valid and real, but it is not yours, and yet it is a part of yours, and they send you out. Speaking now again as an analogy, in terms of time, you are what they will be.

Now, in terms of time and following (he analogy—for all you literal minded people—portions of you go out as you go out from your molecules, and speak back to you, and tell you of realities that now you do not consciously perceive, but that are yours. Now think that!

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 23

I do! But work with your own beliefs—honestly, and see what you think when you are finished. If you believe that knowledge is difficult to achieve, it will be. But you will often, as in the instances mentioned, work within a system that agrees with your beliefs.

Now, up to a point this is beneficial, and you will learn from it, and you will see within the system the reflection of your beliefs, and you will begin to move out of that system. But you need, often, the framework of the system, and the agreement, so that often a beneficial framework is set up, but one through which you will move.

Now in many cases, and in such schools—in any schools of beliefs—you will find, for example, students who will set themselves apart, and begin offshoots as their system of beliefs begin to change. You will find alteration, but in al1 cases, each of you use the system of belief for your own purposes. There will be benefits involved and you will move through each.

There is no end to the creation of beliefs within your system. Each are handy reference points that you use—rocks that you stand on for a specific time. Now when I say move on, I am not speaking in terms, necessarily, of higher or lower advancement. I am not speaking of beliefs as rocks that lead to the mountaintop of truth.

[Rick: "Where do they lead?"]

They lead to other beliefs, and to other realities, and to other creative activities that all extend the nature of your own consciousness—the nature of your own being—and that open up with yourselves the acquiescence to new experiences that increase the being of your being.
It would do you no good, now, to have fifty-six teeth. Your mouth would not hold them, and it would be difficult to smile or frown. I will leave you to make the connection with that analogy.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 22

[Now, what I meant was] often, not always, and much less in this group than usual, people want a pill called truth. You take it and all your problems are solved. You know what to do with your life. There are no decisions for you to make. The pill solves it all for you. You do not believe in pills that come from a bottle any longer, most of you, but you want a metaphysical pill, and the metaphysical pill will solve it all for you.

[A student: "Seth, what is this stuff that everybody calls enlightenment?"]

Now, if I could sing, I would sing, "What is This Thing Called Love?" But I cannot sing.

Enlightenment is a normal part of your consciousness. It is a function of your consciousness.

There are varying methods that you think will help you achieve it. As long as you think you need methods, you will run from method to method, and from teacher to teacher. And the teachers will very cleverly work within your beliefs.

If you believe that you are guilty, then you will go to a teacher who will say,"Yes, you are indeed guilty, and I will tell you how nasty and dirty you are." And in one way or another, he will show you how to do penance for your sins.

It may be a wise and clever benign guru who gives you so many hits over the back with a whip. Hate will lead you back to love, if you allow it to. All emotions come from love. Hate shows you the distance between yourself and another person for whom you feel love.

If you think that the majority of your fellow men are stupid, idiotic, and leading the world toward destruction, it is only because you love the race so strongly, and feel the race falling short of the expectations of your love. If you allow yourself to experience that emotion, then it will lead you back to the realization of your love. But if you deny what you think of as hatred, disgust, or dissatisfaction, then it cannot lead you toward the destination for which it was meant.

If you think you hate a parent, it is because there is in your mind such a separation between yourself and | the love for that parent that you feel. If you allow yourself, therefore, to feel the hatred, you will also experience the love. You do not hate those for whom you have no regard. They do not bother you in any way | whatsoever. They are outside of your notice. You love your enemies whether you know it or not. You are bound to them, for in your mind you constantly compare them with what you think they should be in the vision of your great love for them and for yourself. Whenever you think you hate, you love. But unless you allow yourself to feel the hatred, you will never know. If you hate someone and you beat a pillow, and pretend| you are beating that person to death, then when the murder is committed you will realize the great love that you really feel, and the death will be the death of the hatred, not of the person.

You cannot love yourself and hate your emotions. You cannot love yourself and distrust the reality that | is your own. And within the great affirmation and joy of your being, you can deny and say '"no." For when you deny and say "no" you are doing so comparing what you say "no" to, to what you want to say "yes" to. You are comparing in terms of an ideal that exists in terms of love within your mind. If we bloodless old ghosts are not afraid of emotion, I don't see why you should be.

There are no clear mirrors to look through [to a student] that will show you one impeccable, immaculate reality, and no one, no one ideal Carlos who can say, "I shall and must do this and that to fulfill my abilities." There are, instead, an infinite number of probabilities, and you, my dear Mend, have freedom to move within (hem. You want me to say, "You should do thus and so," or you want yourself to say, "I must do thus and so." But if you flow with the feeling of yourself, you will go where your being goes. Trust—trust—the lives that are within you now. Go along with your own living that flows through you. In your here and now, you are here and now. Feel that here and nowness! Know its knowing! And you will be where the being of you wants to go!

Feel yourself flowing and moving as easily through your life situation as a hair grows out from your head—as easily and naturally. Feel events that you want happening, as hairs grow out from your head. Go with your being. Go with your being. Imagine what you think of as doubts as a beautiful, inner, natural phenomenon, as a rock glowing in the sun, in the stream of your being. They are beautiful and natural. They are not impediments. You flow around them beautifully. They are a part of your being. Now, remember that last sentence particularly, and I return you to your class.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 20

I bid you good evening, and remember this: you have a right to say "no." In the great affirmation of your being, you are conscious. You are therefore able to make a distinction. You can like something better than something else! Within the great affirmation of your being, you can deny.

You can say "no" to a situation freely and joyfully and exuberantly—and feel free, and that you are using the abilities of your consciousness, your spirit, and your creaturehood. If you say "no," you say "no" for a reason. Find out what the reason is. You have a right to it.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 19

If each of you would, for one instant tomorrow, allow yourselves to feel fully the miracle of your own being, then would you indeed find yourselves surrounded by a paradise, but a paradise that would make previous ideas of heaven silly by contrast—a paradise in which you realize the creativity and multidimensional aspects of your own being.

My dear friend over there, Will, you might be a statue—a beautiful sculpture, for all you know of the reality of yourself. And this applies to each of you. Yet there are no barriers that prevent such knowledge or understanding.

If I can feel your uniqueness, individually, with such impact, then why cannot each of you try to feel the grace of your own being? You will look at an animal or a flower and call it beautiful, and ignore the beauty and grace of your own experience. Now this relates not in high spiritual terms necessarily, but to those seeret words that you speak to yourself when you call yourselves stupid, in the seeret closets of your mind.

Would you call a flower stupid? Would you call a star stupid? Would you call a molecule stupid? If you understood the grace of your being, you would look even upon yourselves with joy and gracious abandon. Do you call yourselves dumb, or opaque, or fat, or skinny, or whatever? Whatever derogatory terms you use when you speak to yourselves, stop it!

Feel the uniqueness then of your laughter [to a student] and let your joy spring into your realization, and it will give birth to all those abilities within you. In all of what I have said, there is indeed no greater, practical message.

You think in terms of future selves. And using your terms now—and, as always, that is a loaded statement—but, using your terms, think instead of yourselves as pinnacles of achievement and expression, reached finally by the atoms and molecules that dwell within you. In your terms now, they think and feel and reason.

I return you, then, as always, to the selves that you are, and I entreat you, most humbly, to look within the selves you know for the wisdom that is indeed your own, for the blessing that comes from All That Is, as it is reflected through yourself. Ask me for your blessing, for your blessing. Ask your molecules for their blessing, as you bless them.

See the miracle of tomorrow. When you wake up in the morning, tell yourselves that you will perceive it, and perceive the grace of your being within it.

And now I leave you, and those blessings that I have to give I give you, and those that I do not have, I am sure you can find for yourselves.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 18

In limited terms you all exist in air. But when you begin to approach the feeling of no limitation, you become frightened, and in a frenzy you try to find yourself and define it—and to discover die point at which you emerge into physical reality.

There are no limitations and ihere are no boundaries to ihe self—only those that you adapt, in your terms, at any given time. I did noi say there was no identity; I said there were no boundaries to the self. There is no place or lime where your self ends; there is no probable reality in which you do not exist—in which YOU do not exist.

There are no limitations to what you are. You can form limitations if you want. They will serve to content you. You can put up fences around yourselves and say, "I am here and now and in no other place and no other time", if you are afraid of die idea of your own inner divinity, and of the infinity of your own existence. You can pretend that you exist only within your corporeal image.

You can hide within the minutes and the hours and the years, and see no further if you wani. But only the tiny portion of you that is frightened is so fooled by the game that you are playing with yourself. You are creatures. Each in your own way, therefore, dwell in the same energy and the same knowledge. The point of the present is your point of power. If you assign power to the past, then it is lodged there because of your beliefs. In your terms, the present is a moment of your focus through which you affect both, in your terms, the present and the future. It is a moment of your creaturehood. If you think of the past as top-heavy with power, and of yourself as powerless in the moment, then because of your beliefs you become at the mercy of the past and therefore at the mercy of the present and the future. If you feel your consciousness ah've and alert in the moment, and realize that the present moment is your point of power, then you see yourselves as you are, as creators of your experience individually and creators of the world that you know.

For a moment, open or close your eyes, as you prefer, but sense yourselves in this moment at the height of your power of action, and from this point you influence and form your present, your past and your future. This is your moment of power as each moment in your terms is. This, the present moment, is your moment of action and power from which you influence all of your experience. Let that knowledge then guide you who are nameless, who do not need names, who dwell now in a three-dimensional reality, nameless as always, though you give yourselves names.

You are not the names, you do not need ihe names any more than I need the name. Feel that moment of present reality, dien, as your point of action from which you influence each moment, in your terms of your reality, and you will not feel dwarfed by the past or at the mercy of a future you do not understand. Now in your terms, I am ancient Yet, in your lerms, you are also ancient. If you were truly alive and truly perceptive, and you walked out of this house and, with all of your abilities, all of your abilities working, you picked up one brown dried leaf from last year that littered the grass, and picked it up and understood and felt its reality, and heard what it said, then you would hear my voice, for my voice is a leafs voice.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 15

Listen to me and ask yourself what is your name. If you were alone in the middle of the universe surrounded by darkness, and someone said- some voice out of the ether—"What is your name?", what would you answer? So I ask you,"Whal is your name, each of you?" My name is nameless. I have no name. 1 give you the name of Seth because it is a name and you want names. You give yourselves the names, and you have taken names, because you believe names are important.

Your existence is nameless. It is not voiceless, but it is nameless. The names you take are structures upon which you hang your image. One thousand years hence what will your names mean, and one thousand years before this moment what did your names mean, and what have those names to do with your experience? You are what you are, and what you are is nameless. What you are can be not uttered, and no letter or alphabet can contain it. Yet now you need words and letters and names and objects. You want magic that will tell you what you are.

You each, in your own way, are doing your own thing. And each of you are nameless. That does not mean you do not have an identity. It simply means that a name has nothing to do with your identity, and that entity names are a means and a step along levels of belief that you can use. I told Ruburt from our earliest sessions that he could call me Seth. 1 never said, "My name is Seth," for I am nameless. I have had too many identities to cling to one name!

But you think your names define you, and you are afraid to depart from them. You form your reality. You form the good part.

You are responsible for your successes, for your life, for the joy of your being, for your yawns.

When I tell you that you form your experience, you automatically leap to the conclusion that you form only your bad experiences. Give yourselves credit! You form the joys in your daily Me also, and your happy encounters. It is you who leap to the interpretation that because you form your reality you are responsible only for the dire aspects of your life or for your limitations.

Again, if you will look to those areas where you are pleased and apply those beliefs of success to those areas in which you are not so pleased, you will find there also that you form your experience and that the feeling of achievement can be spread from one area of your living to another.

You form your experience. You form your past, your present, and your future. You are responsible for each daily moment, individually and en masse. En masse, your beliefs bring about the world conditions that you know. Individually, they form your intimate daily life.

As I have told you before, in a manner of speaking, you are given the gifts of the gods. Your beliefs become reality. Regardless, you see, of what Al thinks makes his eyes water (I am not going to get into your smoking problems!)—say that Al believes that his eyes water when it is 45 degrees temperature exactly. All right. Now he believes that that is reality. It is not reality—not rock-bed reality. It is experienced reality because he believes that when certain conditions occur this will happen. Now, each of you, in your own way, will react to different episodes, and so it is up to you to see how that operates in your own lives. But that is not rock-bed reality—it is one of many probable reactions, and you, through your beliefs, have settled upon that. Now as long as you believe that to be far more real than its opposite reaction, you are stuck with it. If you can see it as one probable reaction that you have chosen, and if you can see an opposite reaction as equally valid, then you can free yourself. And the same applies to each of you following that example. And now I return the floor to you.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 10

Because if you take any longer period of time, you will hassle it. You must each do it for yourselves and it is a tricky on Perhaps one of the trickiest, in many ways, that I can devise. You must understand, however, the basis for the experiment that I am proposing. You must realize, first of all, that your private reality is one of numberless probable realities. You are experiencing one of many probable realities. Now, because of your neurological structure you can only physically perceive, in your terms, so many events at once. Therefore, from an unlimited number of probable events you choose those which you will perceive through your physical system, in terms of time and biological reality. It seems to you as I speak, however, that the reality that you know is rock bed reality and that all other realities are probable. Instead, you are perceiving and experiencing one of many probable realities for yourselves. You must understand mat or the experiment will not work. If you insist on thinking of your present reality as rock-bed reality, and everything else as probable, then the experiment will not work. So, first of all, you must realize that you are experiencing one probable reality of many.

Now lake, each of you, an area of your life with which you are not pleased in your terms. Think of it. Now, do not think of it in terms of rock-bed reality, but as one of many probable realities mat you have brought into your experience because of your beliefs. Now, hold in your mind the idea that there are other probable realities in that one area that you can just as easily pull into your physical experience, and experience this biologically, practically, and intimately in your daily life. Then, for perhaps five minutes a day and no more, imagine yourself through your beliefs pulling mat portion of probable reality into your own. For that amount of lime you must, however, change your belief in mat area. You must realize that your belief pulls the reality to you: and therefore only, now, for five minutes, change the belief. And if you do this faithfully you will find your reality in that area changing.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 8

It is not always easy, in your terms, to work with yourself. It is much easier to blame anything else for the "negative" parts of your experience than yourself. It is much easier to assign to other agents the responsibility for your being. But you all try too hard. For you do not understand that within your framework of reference there is always challenge and change. And so, bodily situations have their meaning. The self talks to the self. You always think of illness as negative, as wrong, as bad, as evil—in the same way that you think of light as good and dark as bad, white as pure and black as evil. Now in my book, I mentioned that if you are black and you believe that black is evil, you are in a poor position and you had better change your beliefs. If there is pain in you and you think that pain is evil, you are in a bad position, and you had better change your beliefs.

In your framework of reference, as I have said to you time and time again, you form, YOU form your reality according to your beliefs about it. You always, at each stage, accept your beliefs as reality, and so of course they work for each of you.

If you could suspend for a moment the belief that your beliefs are reality, you could then feel your beliefs form the reality that you know—go out from you and draw into your experience the daily, intimate Me that you know. If you believe that you must eat certain foods, then you had better eat them. If you believe that smoke is bad for you, you had better avoid it. If you believe that needles will save you, then they will save you. But in each case, whether in healing or disease, in joy or in agony, in poverty or in wealth, your beliefs form your reality.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 7

For a moment, forget your question! You are a flower—a very lovely flower. The sun is bright and warm and glowing, and you are blooming. Because you are a flower, you exist in the natural world of abundance and glory. And the sun flows upon you, and you open your petals.

Now what would happen, if, in the middle of a bright sunny afternoon, our flower began to think, and it said, "What am I doing that the sun should shine down upon me? I am a poor, worthless little flower. The great world goes beyond me and I do nothing. Hardly anyone notices me and I am very lonely. How is it that this great sun should shine down upon me?"

And so the flower, following its own though), now begins to droop, and it wiggles its little stem over, 'til it hangs its head beneath a giant oak tree, where the sun cannot fall upon it in the shade. And say our little flower begins to reason further, and says, "If the sun fell upon me, what would I have to do to deserve this great benediction? I musi think of things to do to rationalize my existence." And as it thinks, it grows gloomier and darker, and huddles up against the great tree, so that the sun cannot reach it.

Now, any flower has better sense than that, and so should you! Abundance is all around you. It is the sun! It is the rain! Now you think of those things as natural and good. But wealth, in whatever terms you happen to translate it, is also a pan of your natural world and translation. And so for you to feel free to accept one portion of nature and not the other is not a good belief.

You ARE! Your being IS! You are a portion of All That Is. Therefore, you have a right to abundance as the flower has to the sun. In human terms there are many kinds of abundance, and they are all yours. You must realize that you do not have to rationalize your existence. Because you ARE, you have a right to the abundance of nature in whatever way it is transformed or translated for you.

And you have all to realize that your experience begins from within. And your joyful thoughts bring joy, and your abundant thoughts bring abundance and thoughts of limitation bring limitation. And when you are all laughing here and basking in your own being, and glowing in your Sumari Sun, then you are enjoying abundance—your own abundance, your own sense of fun and creativity. So do not limit yourself.

And realize that THE ENERGY THAT SWEEPS THROUGH THIS FORM IS YOUR OWN—a hint of the energy and joy and abundance that belongs to you. So, play with the blocks of your own belief! Enjoy your own being and spontaneity! And be, in your being, joyful!

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 6

I just said that to you so that you would realize you had nothing to lose, but you will instead gain. I just said that to give you a cushion, because you cannot start checking immediately; you cannot begin this and then start checking yourself and say, "Wait a minute. I've done this five minutes now—where's the money?" But I also tell you that if you can change your belief in a split second with enough strength and intensity, and reverse yourself in mid-air so to speak, then the results could be instantaneous.

The Seth Audio Collection - Excerpt 5

Your thoughts have an electromagnetic reality. Now you must realize that this is true or the rest of what I am saying will indeed sound like Pollyanna nonsense.

When you think in terms, for example, of abundance and plenty, then those thoughts draw to you abundance and plenty as a magnet does. There will be a while, while you are changing your beliefs for example, you will find yourself in a period where you feel quite self deceptive and you are saying, "I am surrounded by wealth and abundance," and you still look around you and you are poor. And you think, "This is a lot of bull!"

But it took you some tune to build up your beliefs to the point of your present experience, and so, in your terms, there may be some lag before your new beliefs draw to you abundance. But your physical experience follows your thought. And you cannot change the experience without first changing your thought.

Now, it does no good to believe two things at the same time. So what you do is this—you say, "I will play around with this idea. I will admit that it might be possible that my own thoughts about money are causing my lack of it. And so, for the hell of it, I will, several times a day, pretend that I am surrounded by abundance, and in my mind I will imagine the things that I want. If it does not work, I have not lost a thing, but if it works, I have gained a lot."

So you try it for several weeks, and each time that you do, the idea becomes a little bit more possible, a little bit more real. And in the meantime, these thoughts are changing the beliefs that you have had. They are at least balancing them. And they begin to draw to you abundance. There is no other way to change your physical reality but by changing your thoughts.

Quotes from "The Magical Approach"

"The creative abilities operate in the same fashion, appearing within consecutive time, but with the main work done outside of it entirely."
Session One, Page 3

"..you fall into the frame of mind in which you think that each minute is valuable - but what you mean is that each minute must be a minute of production."
Session One, Page 3

"I use the word methods because you understand it, but actually we are speaking about an approach to life, a magical or natural approach to life that is man’s version of the animal’s ?literal? instinctive behavior in the universe."
Session One, Page 5

"True creativity comes from enjoying ?the? moments, which then fulfill themselves, and a part of the creative process is indeed the art of relaxation, the letting go, for that triggers magical activity..."
Session One, Page 8

"The old beliefs, of course, and the rational approach, are everywhere reinforced, and so it does have a great weight. The magical approach has far greater weight, if you use it and allow yourselves to operate in that fashion, for it has the weight of your basic natural orientation."
Session One, Page 9

"It is not that you overuse the intellect as a culture, but that you rely upon it to the exclusion of all other faculties in your approach to life."
Session Two, Page 13

"Now when you understand that intellectually, then the intellect can take it for granted that its own information is not all the information that you possess."
Session Two, Page 16

"..the intellect can then realize that it does not have to go it all alone: Everything does not have to be reasoned out, even to be understood."
Session Two, Page 16

"The rational approach, built up around this framework, insists that the best way to solve a problem is to concentrate upon it, to project its effects into the future, to ruminate upon its consequences, to stare at the bare facts head on."
Session Two, Page 17

"The intellect, then, can and does form strong paranoid tendencies when it is put into the position of believing that it must solve all problems alone -- or nearly -- and certainly when it is presented with any picture of worldwide predicaments. The rational approach, built up around this framework, insists that the best way to solve a problem is to concentrate upon it, to project its effects into the future, to ruminate upon its consequences, to stare at the bare facts head on. This brings about an atmosphere in which the problem is compounded."
Session Two, Page 17

"In the position in which your culture places the intellect, it does see itself quite alone, separated both from other portions of the personality, from other creatures, and from nature itself."
Session Three, Page 27

"The idea of heaven, for all of its distortions, has operated as a theoretical framework, assuring the intellect of its survival."
Session Three, Page 29

"In your terms the intellect’s primary function is to make clear deductions and distinctions involving the personality’s relationship with the world."
Session Three, Page 30

"It certainly seems too simple to say what I am going to say, yet it is almost as if you would be better off turning the entire rational approach upside down, taking it for granted that all of its assumptions were false, for they are indeed more false than true."
Session Three, Page 30

"The intellect is, again, the result of highly spontaneous processes of which it itself knows nothing..."
Session Three, Page 31

"Desire is action. In the inner world, your desires bring about their own fulfillment, effortlessly. That inner world, and the exterior one, intersect and interweave. They only appear separate. In the physical world, time may have to elapse, or whatever. Conditions may have to change, or whatever, but the desire will bring about the proper results. The feeling of effortlessness is what is important."
Session Four, Page 45

"The intellect alone cannot bring about one motion of the body. It must count upon those other properties that it does indeed set into motion -- that spontaneous array of inner complexity, that orderly magic."
Session Five, Page 54

"When the intellect is used properly, it thinks of a goal and automatically sets the body in motion toward it, and automatically arouses the other levels of communication unknown to it, so that all forces work together toward the achievement."
Session Five, Page 54

"When the intellect is improperly used, however. it is as if the intellect feels required to somehow know or personally direct all of those inner processes. When the erroneous belief systems and negativity connected with so-called rational reason apply, then it is as if our person sees the target, but instead of directing his attention to it he concentrates upon all of the different ways that his arrow could go wrong: It could fall to the left or the right, too far or not far enough, break in the air, fall from his hand, or in multitudinous other ways betray his intent."
Session Five, Page 54

"In other words, the magical approach and the so-called rational one are to be combined in a certain fashion for best results. People sometimes smite you, telling of their intent to make money - or rather, to have it. They concentrate upon money, so they say, and await for it in full faith that it will be attracted to them because of their belief and concentration. They might do the point of power exercise, for example. They may also, however, have quit their jobs, ignored impulses to find other work, or to take any rational approaches, and rely upon, say, the magical approach alone. This does not work either, of course."
Session Five, Page 55

"You do not need a human intellect to be aware of your own consciousness. Your intellect is a part of you - a vital, functioning portion of your cognitive processes - but it does not contain your identity."
Session Six, Page 61

"Ideally, however, children finally claim their feelings and their thoughts as their own. They identify naturally with both, finding each valid and vital. By the time you are an adult, however, you have been taught to disconnect your identity from your feelings as much as possible, and to think of your personhood in terms of your intellectual orientation."
Session Six, Page 62

"The intellect’s expectations and intents spontaneously. and automatically trigger the proper bodily mechanisms to bring about the necessary environmental interactions, and your intent as expressed through your intellect directs your experience of the world."
Session Seven, Page 70

"The beliefs the intellect operate then as powerful suggestions, particularly when the intellect identifies with those beliefs, so that there is little distance between the intellect and the beliefs that it holds as true."
Session Seven, Page 70

"Your own relationship, your private beliefs about the sort of persons you wanted individually for mates, brought about incalculable actions that led finally to your meeting."
Session Seven, Page 71

"Your beliefs bring you into correspondence with the elements likely to lead to their affirmation. They draw from Framework 2 all of the necessary ingredients. They elicit from other people behavior that is in keeping with those beliefs."
Session Seven, Page 71

"Your experiences will follow your concentration and belief and expectation. The mind is a great discriminator. I’m Lynda Dahl and I’m very excited about this new SNI offering because it will pretty much be my project, one that matches my inner inclinations very closely. Ever since I started reading the Seth material in 1984, most of my focus has been on attempting to understand the practical implications of what Seth says and then integrate it into my thinking as a given. Living a safe universe eventually became my overall goal.

Not an easy task, as all of you know, because the learning goes on...and on...and on. But as a by-product of my ongoing focus, I've gathered to me hundreds upon hundreds of Seth quotes on various subjects that specifically clarify what Seth is saying or recommending or clearing up regarding the nature of reality and how understanding it can lead to living a safe universe.

So what I'll be doing with Seth Talk, among other things, is laying the foundation which I believe will lead us to living a safe universe, nesting my gathered quotes together into a composite picture of what Seth says about certain subjects that lead us in that direction, subjects such as action (also called the vitality of All That Is, or the crux of creation), and the spacious present (the only place where action happens), and significances (the true cause and effect, happening in the spacious present and brought about by action). Etcetera, etcetera. I'll post a new entry periodically (hopefully at least once a month), and those of you on our email list will get a heads-up when one appears.

So, to kick off Seth Talk, the first offering is below. It's a long one because I wanted to give you some background about the purpose of Seth Talk and where it will eventually lead us. I hope Seth Talk'soverview topic, Living a Safe Universe, will prove to be an intriguing journey through the Seth material from a different perspective than reading the books one at a time from cover-to-cover allows us, because the subjects that comprise the overview, and their quotes, will be gathered from all books to be made into a whole.

The layout you will see below is temporary. Jeff Kiefer, our wizard of the web, plans to redo Seth Talkwhen he has an opportunity, creating a register of entries, with each entry standing alone as a document. But for now they will be posted as we do with Seth World News, one after the other in one long presentation.

Also, I’m sorry to say the quotes will not be annotated. The reason is that in my private files, where all the quotes will come from, I find that annotation of the type of Seth comments I normally use (one or two-liners) gets cumbersome and burdens the mind’s eye instead of clarifying the point of the quotes.

And one final note, folks. Do feel free to copy and paste anything you wish from Seth Talk into a Word doc for printing purposes. No problem whatsoever.

(Oh, another thought. If you're on Facebook, do drop by Lynda Madden Dahl, my page. Although FB isn't really a good, thorough venue for it, we're hoping to explore some of Seth's ideas there, certainly some of his quotes. At the very least, we'll be sharing ideas and friendship with other Sethies. ** Go Seth!)

Seth Talk's Main Topic: LIVING A SAFE UNIVERSE

Subjects to be Discussed Over Time
1. Action, Identities, the Three Creative Dilemmas
2. Spacious Present
3. Significances/Associations/Subjective Continuity
4. Suggestion/Expectation
5. Moment Point/Present
6. Probabilities
7. Thought, Emotion, Will, Imagining, Intensity
8. Inner Self
9. Trust and Faith
10. Goals and Goals’ Circumstances

Seth Talk Entries to Date:
July 1, 2010: Intro; Action, Identities, the Three Creative Dilemmas
July 29, 2010: Action, Identities, the Three Creative Dilemmas (cont.)

JULY 1, 2010 * First Entry

This first Seth Talk entry is the prelude to a series of eleven documents that are basically all Seth quotes on given subjects, with little prose involved (a listing of the eleven is embedded within this entry and each will be posted in due time). What you will read here is a modified version of my kick-off talk used at SNI’s 2010 Seth intensive workshops, because it nicely and clearly sets the stage for the purpose of Seth Talk and leads into the astounding Seth quotes (coming soon) that clarify so much about the nature of reality.

Living a Safe Universe
Seth says, “When man realizes that he, himself, creates his personal and universal environment in concrete terms, then he can begin to create a private and universal environment much superior to the (present) one that is a result of haphazard and unenlightened constructions. This is our main message to the world, and this is the next line in man's conceptual development…”

Haphazard and unenlightened constructions. That’s what Seth says we’re creating to date, and he’s talking about in our personal as well as public lives. However, he then says, “When you get to the point that you realize you are forming your day-to-day existence and the life that you know, then you can begin to alter your own mental and psychic patterns, and therefore change your daily environment…. The entire structure of your existence will begin to change with these realizations…”

And Seth has been doing his best to help us along. He says: “…Not only have I been trying to divest you of official ideas, but to prepare you for the acceptance of a new version of reality…”

So, what are the official ideas Seth is trying to divest us of so we can live this new version of reality? It’s what he calls the official line of consciousness, and its main organizing factor is linear time. He says, “The official line of consciousness forms a world about it, and you perceive and experience that world, and it will always show you the results of the beliefs that are inherent in the official line of consciousness. While you devote yourself to that official line of consciousness, the world will always appear the same…”

And the reason it will always appear the same is because the one-line official consciousness gives us no place to go, no openings to aspire to outside the limitations of linear time, because it claims there is:
evolution
and cause and effect
and one world
and one timeline for that world
and one timeline for us

And it tells us that these things are facts, and therefore cannot be altered. They just ARE. And those facts force us to think a certain way, a way that leaves little to no room to believe we, as Seth says, create our personal and universal environments in concrete terms.

The good news, according to Seth, is this: “The one-line stage of consciousness was necessary... But that stage contained within it its own impetus. It set up challenges that could not be solved at that stage of consciousness, and that would automatically lead you into other strands of awareness.”

Those challenges that Seth’s talking about take the form of our haphazard and unenlightened constructions. And in order to solve our issues made manifest in those constructions, we need to become aware of other information, and then think differently because of it.

Years ago I read a line from Seth that I didn’t understand, and it puzzled me for a long time. He says: “Your ideas of time are detrimental. Time works with you and not against you.” (He said to Rob, underline that four times.)

And the more I read the Seth material, it finally hit me that Seth was talking about two different kinds of time in that one statement. When he says, “Your ideas of time are detrimental,” he’s talking about our ideas of linear time and our acceptance of cause and effect – which is what linear time is all about. And when he says, “Time works with you and not against you,” he’s talking about subjective time working with us, subjective time in the spacious present – which is the only real time there is, according to him.

And it struck me that if we can get a grip on the use of subjective time, then time truly will work for us, mostly because we will drop the idea of cause and effect. And by dropping the idea of cause and effect, we will significantly change the rules of the game. Seth says: “As you (come to) understand time, you will eventually be able to merge your inner comprehension with your physical self, and form your world on a conscious basis.”

Indeed, time is the issue. We need a different perspective on time, an expansion of our thinking to include the working assumption that time is subjective, not objective, and therefore we can override the belief in cause and effect. And when we do, Seth has good news for us. He says, “You begin to glimpse a promised land – a land of psyche and reality that represents unimpeded nature.”

Understanding the subjective nature of time is the key to living a safe universe without the haphazard constructions Seth referenced earlier. And it is perhaps one of the most difficult issues for us to grasp. Not theoretically or intellectually because we can pretty much understand what Seth is saying about simultaneous time vs. linear time, or at least we can see the outlines of the bigger picture. That’s not where our issue lies.

The real challenge in understanding and using time to our advantage lies in the fact that we believe linear time. Not that we believe in it - but that we believe it! That is, we believe it when we assume an action we took yesterday caused an event today. We believe it when a memory of a “past” event is accepted as a part of our past. We believe it when something happens to us in the present that we accept as a random event. We believe it when an object is assumed to be solid. We believe it when we assume there is something beyond the walls of our home, always there even if we don’t see it.

Some ideas about linear time we’ve loosened. When we no longer fear death, we’ve loosened the hold of linear time. When we know the illness or accident we experienced was caused by us, we’ve loosened the hold of linear time. When we consciously choose a lucid dream or an out of body, we’ve loosened the hold of linear time. But overall, a belief in linear time dominates our lives. And yet – and this is the ironic part – we know, because Seth tells us so, that our view of linear time is a detriment to us and to our individual growth. That our freedom lies in understanding and using simultaneous time.

Seth says, “You have put yourselves in a position where your consciousness must now become aware of the probable pasts and probable futures in order to form for yourselves a sane, fulfilling, and creative present.” And we can’t accept or work with the probabilities surrounding pasts and futures, and the implications of it all, unless we truly accept and work with subjective time.

So this talk is in direct response to the challenge Seth has laid down for us, paraphrased – to loosen our hold on linear time thinking, because our efforts will lead us to freedom from haphazard and unenlightened constructions and into a sane and fulfilling present.

What we will do here is to frame our realities through the lens of simultaneous time instead of linear time. In order to do that, we have to start from a different place than our thinking normally takes us. That is, instead of seeing and discussing our lives as emerging from linear time and trying to use that framework to bring about change, we will see our realities as immersed in the spacious present in subjective time, and learn to use the knowledge and tools of that framework.

Seth says, “You recognized the overall vitality of our material, but you did not realize that it meant a complete reorientation of your attitudes. You did not realize that you were being presented, not merely with an alternate view of reality, but with the closest approximation you could get of what reality was, and how it worked, and what it meant.”

And reality is not linear time and cause and effect. To get to a complete reorientation of our attitudes, we can’t just theoretically accept Seth’s wonderful alternate view of reality. We really must bring it alive in our thinking, which will quite literally bring it alive in our present. We need to own it as our rock bed platform of thought, not just as an intriguing, but abstract, idea of Seth’s. We must make it ours.

So I’ll bring certain of Seth’s topics to your awareness here and in following documents, all chosen for and aimed at reinforcing the idea that we are indeed basically non-physical consciousness in the spacious present simply using the illusion of linear time for our own purposes.

And that change in our thinking about who we are and what we’re capable of, will eventually lead us to, as Seth says, “a land of psyche and reality that represents unimpeded nature.” Or, as I think of it, freedom.

These topics will be piecemealed in different handouts, building toward a whole, a whole that, when we see it clearly for what it is, will push the boundaries of linear time’s unquestioned acceptance and walk us toward that sane and fulfilling present.

And the subjects are:
1. Action, Identities, the Three Creative Dilemmas
2. Spacious Present
3. Significances/Associations/Subjective Continuity
4. Suggestion/Expectation
5. Moment Point/Present
6. Probabilities
7. Thought, Emotion, Will, Imagining, Intensity
8. Inner Self
9. Trust and Faith
10. Safe Universe
11. Goals and Goals’ Circumstances

I’ll start the ball rolling right now on the first topic, that of action, identities and the three creative dilemmas, and I won’t do much editorializing during this part. That is, I won’t be saying much about their relevancy to us in our everyday lives and their very practical implications. We’ll hold that part for after the groundwork is laid through the coming documents. (FYI, the next Seth Talk posting will be the full quotes document on this subject.)

Okay, and now a drum roll, please, because…. What we’re about to discuss is the information that has the distinction of differentiating the Seth material from any other body of work in today’s world. This is the information that sets Seth head and shoulders apart and makes sense of everything else…in a logical way.

Living a Safe Universe: Action, Identities, the Three Creative Dilemmas

Before what Seth calls the beginning – or before objectified reality, when the only reality was subjective - all things – realities, identities, objects, etc. - were already created and held within All That Is. They simply were not materialized or expressed outside of the subjective reality of All That Is.

But even after objective reality, or in our case, physical reality, was created by All That Is as an extension of itself, not all of ATI was or can ever be fully expressed, or objectified – part of it always has to be unexpressed. But it’s a pressing desire on the part of ATI to continually materialize some of itself, so there is a constant attempt to do so.

And this attempt, this trying, results in action. Not the action of motion as we know it, but the action of ATI. Seth says, “Action is the breath of inner vitality (or All that Is), of which all materializations of any kind are composed. It represents the relationship between unexpressed inner vitality and materialized vitality.” Some might call it creation.

So, action – or the breath of inner vitality - begins from within ATI and is a part of ATI. And since action is a part of ATI, the materializations that occur because of this action, are, simply put, All That Is expressing itself in different forms.

Which means that everything that’s materialized in whatever reality, in whatever form, is ATI expressing itself as action. There is nothing anywhere, ever, that is not ATI expressing itself as action…and that includes us.

To explain all this further, Seth talks about three creative dilemmas that occur because of the constant need of ATI to keep creation happening, or said another way, to keep action happening, for creation and action are one. And while this won’t seem so obvious at first, the dilemmas are the birthplace of everything.

First creative dilemma: Is actually what we’ve already talked about here. Here’s how Seth words it: “The first creative dilemma is that which exists when inner vitality (or All that Is) struggles to completely materialize, though it cannot completely materialize.”

This constant struggle results in action, as we discussed. But this struggle is not only the birth of action. It’s the birth of identities. Seth says, “An identity is an unfolding of action upon itself; and through this interweaving of action with itself, an identity is formed. Yet although identity is formed from action, action and identity cannot be separated.”

So an identity is action. And what identities are Seth talking about? He’s saying that any identity that ever comes into being starts here. Nowhere in the greatest stretches of ATI, expressed and not expressed, is there a mechanism other than action that creates identities. And that becomes a key factor when we later start talking about ourselves and our personal and mass realities, and it brings great clarity to those subjects.

So every identity starts existence or is materialized right here during the first creative dilemma. As is everything, actually, as we’ll learn.

So now let’s discuss the second creative dilemma, and interestingly, we’ll learn about the beginning of consciousness.

Second creative dilemma: “The second dilemma occurs, then, because identity, because of its characteristics, continually seeks stability, while stability is impossible.”

“It is this second dilemma, precisely between identity’s constant attempts to maintain stability, and action’s inherent drive for change, that results in the imbalance, the exquisite creative by-product that is consciousness of self.”

So, identities are action which is conscious of itself. That’s what they are – action which is conscious of itself. And because identities cannot be separated from action, identities constantly change, because action constantly changes.

An inner self is formed from this stage of the dilemmas. It’s an action of All That Is which is conscious of itself. And an inner self constantly changes, because each action causes another action which causes change.

A note here: You may have noticed that Seth didn’t say consciousness comes first and then identities are formed from consciousness – which is the prevailing idea in the New Age. The knowledge that identities come first breaks Seth apart from other works, and finally relieves the need to dress consciousness in spiritual clothes, similar to God’s but now called New Age. What Seth says is that consciousness is a tool used by identities. And we’ll talk more about that, and its implications, later.

Okay, on to the third and last dilemma, and here’s where we come in.

“The third dilemma is when consciousness of self attempts to separate itself from action, resulting in a state of ego.”

So, consciousness of self, created in the last dilemma, is not the same thing as consciousness of ego self – which is, of course, what we are.

Seth says, “Ego consciousness involves a state in which consciousness of self attempts to divorce itself from action, an attempt on the part of consciousness to perceive action as an object.”

So, ego consciousness views action – or All That Is - as though action is outside of itself, manifested into objects. But separation between action and ego consciousness – or ego consciousness and objects - is obviously impossible, since no consciousness or identity can exist without action, because they are inseparable.

Seth says, “…It appears to ego that action is not only separate from itself, but that action is initiated by the ego, and a result rather than a cause of ego’s own existence and experience.”

And one point here: From All that Is to action to identity to consciousness is actually all one loop of continuing action, and there is no boundary that separates any of that action. So we, as ego consciousness, are simply All That Is and action and identity and consciousness of self (in our case, inner self) attempting to divorce our self from action and not actually able to.

This whole issue becomes paramount to us understanding that we are All That Is and we are our inner self – not an offshoot, not a consciousness formed by our inner self and placed in a separate reality, but that we ARE our inner self. Seth says “You cannot be disconnected from your inner self, because it is what you are made of.” And he adds, “When you say ‘I will do this myself,’ you are speaking with a limited idea of identity. Nothing is ever really done alone…”

So, those are the three dilemmas. To quickly review:

1. The first is when inner vitality – or All That Is - struggles to completely materialize, but it can’t completely materialize, and that results in action and identities…and they are integrated.

2. The second dilemma happens because identity constantly attempts to maintain stability, but action – which is always integrated with identity - has an inherent drive for change, and that imbalance results in what Seth calls “the exquisite creative by-product that is consciousness of self.”

3. The third dilemma is when consciousness of self attempts to separate itself from action and see itself and everything else as objects, resulting in a state of ego.

Seth says, “These three dilemmas represent the three areas within which inner vitality (or All that Is) can experience itself.” And he says, “The creative dilemmas are the basis for all realities, and the heart of all meaning.”

This is it, folks. This is how and why creation happens. And nothing happens outside these three dilemmas, because the dilemmas constitute how All that Is creates. That’s it. From identities to consciousnesses to realities to objects – everything happens right here.

And by knowing this and other things we’ll discuss in the following documents, we will come to see who we really are, and how to use that knowledge to create our realities consciously.

So, to wrap this part up:

Accepting the fact that we are not primarily human consciousness in linear time, but wholly non-physical consciousness – or action – using linear time for our own purposes, changes the ground rules completely. But the changed ground rules have to be recognized and built upon in order to effectively lead us to a personal safe universe – one without doubt, without fear, with clarity, with absolute trust…and with a built-in ease of conscious creation.

Change starts with knowledge and continues with integration; knowledge by itself does not lead to change. And integration does not work until we are so comfortable with an alternate way of thinking that it becomes natural.

And as long as we hold such a strong inner acceptance of linear time, we cannot effectively use our knowledge of ourselves as action, and all it implies.

And that is our challenge. Or as Seth calls it, our learning process. He says, “Remind yourselves that you are involved in a learning process; you are daring enough to accept the responsibility for your actions.”

And so we shall.

JULY 29, 2010 * Second Entry

Living a Safe Universe: Action, Identities, Three Creative Dilemmas (cont.)
Seth says, “You need not say, ‘The universe is safe,’ for, at your present levels, that will only enrage you! You say instead, ‘I live in a safe universe,’ and so you shall.”
When all is said and done, what we really want out of this existence is to live in a personal safe universe, isn’t it? That is, we want to live without doubt, without fear, with clarity and with absolute trust, because with that psychic platform under us, our creative bases are covered. No more haphazard and unenlightened constructions that seem out of our control, but instead constructions that mirror back satisfaction and our innate understanding and use of the nature of reality.
And an interesting thing happens along the way to a safe universe. We redefine our self. Indeed, we cannot get from here to there without that redefinition in place, because we can’t create overall safety without understanding why safety is even possible. And that “why” is answered only through an expanded understanding of the self.
In the first Seth Talk, we started that redefinition of self by discussing the three creative dilemmas, action and identities. And each subsequent Seth Talk entry will substantially add to our understanding of the self. And it will become crystal clear along the way that we are basically notphysical consciousness in linear time, but non-physical consciousness in the spacious present using the camouflage of linear time for our own purposes. And that significant alteration in our thinking will be what allows the creation of a personal safe universe.
From this point on you will see eleven documents posted here, one by one, perhaps a month apart (sooner if I can). Each document will be comprised of Seth quotes, each one short and to the point and specific to its subject, taken from one or more - usually many more – of the Seth books. As I explained in the intro to Seth Talk, the quotes are not annotated because I chose them over the years for my personal use, never dreaming I’d eventually share them with other Seth readers.
Today’s quotes document is titled “Seth on Action, Identities, the Three Creative Dilemmas.” Yes, this is what the July 1 entry was all about. But because that entry was so long in itself, and because these quotes deserve your undivided focused time, I chose to hold them until now.

And there was another reason I chose to hold them, a more compelling reason, actually. This information is truly at the very core of redefining the self and our relationship to reality creation. We may not at first grasp the significance of what Seth is saying, but it is, in my opinion, imperative that we try, because as Seth says, the three dilemmas (which include action and identities) “…are the basis for all realities, and the heart of all meaning.”
This is where everything starts, terminates, and starts again, with the process happening millions of times a second to our complete individual camouflage realities - not just our realities’ parts, because there are no parts. So the millions of terminations per second applies to our bodies, the kitchen stove, a sunset, a flea, the very ground upon which we stand and the air which we breathe – quite literally, everything. Sorting out what this means to us and how it, along with a few other of Seth’s concepts stirred into the mix, inherently redefines the self is what will eventually lead us to a safe universe. (It also helps us understand how certain things can occur, such as spontaneous healings.)

The information about action, identities and the three dilemmas will be the building blocks upon which everything else we’ll discuss in Seth Talk will reside – indeed, upon which our very existence resides. So my recommendation: Don’t skim over the quotes document, reading it all in one session. Instead, take each quote individually and reflect on its significance to you, action and identity and self that you are, over several sessions. And using your mind’s eye, see how they build a composite picture, starting with All That Is right through to ego consciousness. It’s truly amazing stuff, folks!

1. Seth on Action, Identities,
& the Three Creative Dilemmas

A portion of All That Is resides within and is a part of every consciousness. Every consciousness is therefore cherished and protected individually.

Each self is endowed with the impetus (for creation), for it is a fabric from which All That Is made itself.

You do have access to a portion of All That Is that is highly attuned to you only, above all others.

You see yourself at a certain age, within a given set of circumstances. When you realize that you are also a portion of All That Is, then you will see that this concept is erroneous and limited.

Within All That Is, the wish, the desire and expectation of creativity existed before all other actuality.

The feelings, in other words, were adequate proof to All That Is that it was.

And you create for the same reason, and within all of you is the memory of that primal agony—that urge to create and free all probable consciousnesses into actuality.

Action:

Action is the breath of inner vitality (All that Is) of which all materializations of any kind are composed. It represents the relationship between unexpressed inner vitality and materialized vitality.

Action is the spontaneous nature of inner vitality toward various expressive materializations.

Action is a result of inner vitality’s attempt to completely express itself in materializations, and its inability to do so.

Action approximates as nearly as possible that portion of inner vitality which cannot be completely materialized within any camouflage, within a plane.

All materializations of any kind are composed of action.

Action materializes itself in various forms. I term these forms camouflage.

Within your system the camouflage of action is physical matter.

Action can never be considered apart from that which is seemingly acted upon, for action becomes part of all structure.

There is no separate force that causes action.

Action is more like growth than force.

Value fulfillment is action.

A thought is action.

Action takes place within the spacious present.

Action is a dimension of existence, action within action, an unfolding of action upon itself.

Action is a by-product of any reality, and a part of all reality.

Action necessarily changes that reality and forms from it a new reality.

The continued existence of your physical body is determined by action.

Action is as valid whether the act is conscious and voluntary, or whether it occurs within a dream or within a thought.

By slowing down his perception of action, man imagines that he lengthens time.

Every action is a termination (of everything that came previously).

Each action creates a new reality.

Identities:

An identity is an unfolding of action upon itself; and through this interweaving of action with itself, an identity is formed.

The energy of the action, the workings of action within and upon itself, forms identity.

Yet although identity is formed from action, action and identity cannot be separated.

Identities are action which is conscious of itself.

Identity, like action, is a dimension of existence.

Were it not for action, identity would be impossible.

The reality of an identity exists within the action.

Without identities action would be meaningless, for there would be nothing upon which action could act.

Action must, therefore, create identities.

To remain an identity, an identity must completely renew itself, and each renewal is a termination. Yet without the termination no new action on the part of the identity would be possible.

Every action is a termination, and yet without the termination, identity would cease to exist, for consciousness without action would cease to be conscious.

Without action no identity can be aware of its own existence.

The Three Creative Dilemmas:

The First Dilemma is that which exists when inner vitality struggles to completely materialize, though it cannot completely materialize.

This first dilemma results in action, and from action’s own working upon itself we have seen that identity was formed, and that these two are inseparable.

Action, having of itself, and because of its nature, formed identity, now also because of its nature would seem to destroy identity, since action must involve change. And any change would seem to threaten identity.

Identity must seek stability while action must seek change, yet identity could not exist without change, without action, for identity is the result of action, and not apart from it but a part of it.

Identities are never constant, as you yourselves are not the same consciously or unconsciously from one moment to another.

The Second Dilemma occurs, then, because identity, because of its characteristics, continually seeks stability, while stability is impossible.

It is this second dilemma, precisely between identity’s constant attempts to maintain stability, and action’s inherent drive for change, that results in the imbalance, the exquisite creative by-product that is consciousness of self.

Consciousness and existence do not exist because of delicate balances, so much as they are made possible by lacks of balances.

There would be no reality as it is understood to be if balance were ever maintained.

Consciousness of self involves a consciousness of self within, amid, and as a part of action.

Consciousness of self is still consciousness directly connected with action.

A consciousness is a gestalt of patterns of perception, by which action knows itself.

A particular consciousness is a gestalt of these conceptual patterns; but there is nothing to prevent a consciousness from increasing itself by experiencing other conceptual patterns or patterns of perception.

A self is composed of a gestalt of perception patterns, within which a fairly constant efficiency is maintained. This is the best definition I can give you at this time.

The self—being action which has formed itself into gestalts of pattern perceptions, by which it knows itself—changes constantly.

The inner self is that inner portion of action which forms the egos, and the selves, through the dilemmas of which I have spoken.

The Third Dilemma is when consciousness of self attempts to separate itself from action, resulting in a state of ego.

Consciousness of self is not the same thing as consciousness of ego self.

Ego consciousness involves a state in which consciousness of self attempts to divorce itself from action, an attempt on the part of consciousness to perceive action as an object.

It appears to the ego that action is not only separate from itself, but that action is initiated by the ego, and is a result rather than a cause of ego’s own existence.

Separation is obviously impossible, since no consciousness or identity can exist without action, because they are inseparable.

Ego’s seeming independence from action is basically meaningless, since ego is also action.

Ego consciousness, in this attempt, strives to perceive action not only as separate, but to perceive it in such a fashion that it appears to ego that action is not only separate from itself, that is separate from the ego, but that action is initiated by the ego, and a result rather than a cause of ego’s own existence.

The ego is action’s attempt to stand off from itself.

You cannot escape action. The ego is a part of action.

The ego attempts to control action by standing apart from it.

When the ego gives up its hold upon what it considers control of action, then as in dreams almost any action is possible.

These Three Dilemmas represent three areas of reality within which inner reality, or inner vitality (All That Is), can experience itself.

And here we have also one of the reasons why inner vitality can never achieve complete materialization. The very action involved in vitality’s attempt to materialize itself adds to the inner dimension of inner vitality.

Action basically can never complete itself. Inner vitality, materializing in any form whatsoever, at once multiplies the possibilities of further materialization.

Inner vitality attempts to materialize itself completely, and yet because of its very nature, with each materialization it increases itself, making the attempt impossible. This is the basic dilemma from which all types of reality spring.

The creative dilemmas of which I have spoken are the basis for all realities, and the heart of all meaning.

Phychic Politics - Codicils

Codicils
(Alternate hypotheses as a base for private and public experience.)

All of creation is sacred and alive, each part connected to each other part, and each communicating in a creative cooperative commerce in which the smallest and the largest and equally involved.

The physical senses present one unique version of reality, in which being is perceived in a particular dimensionalized sequence, built up through neurological patterning, and is the result of one kind of neurological focus. There are alternate neurological routes, biologically acceptable, and other sequences so far not chosen.

Our individual self-government and our political organizations are by-products of sequential perception, and our exterior methods of communication set up patterns that correlate with, and duplicate, our synaptic behavior. We lock ourselves into certain structures of reality in this way.

Our sequential prejudiced perception is inherently far more flexible than we recognize, however. There are half steps—other unperceived impulses—that leap the nerve ends, too fast and too slow for our usual focus. Recognition of these can be learned and encouraged, bringing in perceptive data that will trigger changes in usual sense response, filling out potential sense spectra with which we are normally not familiar.

This greater possible sense spectrum includes increased perception of inner bodily reality in terms of cellular identity and behavior; automatic conscious control of bodily processes; and increased perception of exterior conditions as the usual senses become more vigorous. (Our sight, for example, is not nearly as efficient as it could be. Nuances of color, texture, and depth could be expanded and our entire visual area attain a brilliance presently considered exceptional or supernormal.)

Comments on Codicils

Acceptance of these first codicils would expand practical knowledge of the self.; break down barriers that are the results of our prejudiced perception, and restructure personal, social, and political life.

Concepts of the self and practical experience of the self must be broadened if the species is to develop its true potentials. Only an evolution of consciousness can alter the world view that appears to our official line of consciousness.

Comments on Codicil 2

This next step is as important as the birth of Christianity was in the history of mankind. It will present a new structure for civilization to follow. Christianity represented the human psyche at a certain point, forming first inner patterns for development that then became exteriorized as myth, drama, and history, with the Jewish culture of the Talmud presenting the psyche’s direction. The differences between Jewish and Christian tradition represented allied but different probabilities, one splitting off from the others, but united by common roots and actualized in the world to varying degrees.

The traditional personified god concept represented the mass psyche’s one-ego development; the ego ruling the self as God ruled man; man dominant over the planet and other species, as God was dominant over man—as opposed to the idea of many gods or the growth of a more multifocused self with greater nature identification.

Neurological patterning of the kind we know began with the early old-Testament Jews (known, then, as God’s people), looking forward through time to a completely one-ego focused self: Before, neurological functioning was not as set; and in our world today some minority peoples and tribes still hold to those alternate neurological pulses. These will not appear to our measuring devices because we are literally blind to them.

The Jewish prophets, however, utilized these alternate focuses of perception themselves, and were relatively unprejudiced neurologically. They were therefore able to perceive alternate visions of reality. Yet their great work, while focusing the energy of an entire religion, and leading to Christianity, also resulted in limiting man’s potential perceptive area in important ways.

The prophets were able to sense the potentials of the mass psyche, and their prophecies charted courses in time, projecting the Jewish religion into the future. The prophecies gave the people great strength precisely because they gave their religion a future in time, providing a thread of continuity and a certain immortality in earthly terms.

The prophecies were psychic molds to be filled out in flesh. Some were fulfilled and some were not, but the unfulfilled ones were forgotten and served their purpose by providing alternate selections and directions. The Prophecies ahead of time charted out a people’s probable course, foreseeing the triumphs and disasters inherent in such an adventure through time.

They provided psychic webworks, blueprints, and dramas, with living people stepping into the roles already outlined, but also improvising as they went along. These roles were valid, however, chosen in response to an inner reality that foresaw the shape that the living psyche of the people would take in time.

But as a snake throws off old skin, the psyche throws off old patterns that have become rigid, and we need a new set of psychic blueprints to further extend the species into the future, replete with great deeds, heroes, and challenges; a new creative drama projected from the psyche into the three-dimensional arena. For now we no longer view reality through original eyes, but through structures of beliefs that we have outgrown. These structures are simply meant to frame and organize experience, but we mistake the picture for the reality that it represents. We’ve become neurologically frozen in that respect, forced to recognize the one sequential pattern of sense perceptions, so that we think that the one we’ve chosen is the only one possible.

Comments on Codicil 3

Thus far we’ve projected the unrecognized portions of our greater selfhood outward into God, religion, government, and exteriorized concepts. In this existence, selfhood is dependent upon sense perceptions, so that our neurological prejudice and rigid focus have limited our concepts of identity. When we do become aware of unofficial information, coming through other than recognized channels then it seems to come from “notself,” or outside.

A great deal of energy has been used to repress levels of selfhood and to project these into religious and nationalistic heroes and cultural organizations. Government and religion try to preserve the status quo, to preserve their own existences, not for political or religious reasons, but to preserve the official picture of the self around which they are formed.

But the structured reality in which that kind of a self can exist is breaking down. The official picture no longer fits or explains private experience which is growing out of it. There is a momentary rift between the inner psyche and its creations.

Besides this, the experienced self is not the same through the ages. The experienced self is a psychic creation, responsive to exterior conditions which it creates as the psyche dives into the waters of experienced earthly selfhood. Only a portion of the potential self is experienced, but different portions as intents and purposes change. It is possible, though, to actualize more of our potential.

Comments on Codicil 4 and 5

The answers and solutions lie in using levels of consciousness now considered eccentric or secondary. This includes far greater utilization of the dream states and altered conditions thus far thought to be exceptions of consciousness. These “exceptions” represent other kinds of focuses, greatly needed to broaden our concepts of the self; and our experience of personal selfhood by increasing conceptualization, giving direct experience of alternate views, and bringing other kinds of data to bear upon the world we know. In the past, the attitudes surrounding such perceptions brought about their own difficulties. The perceptions and biologically acceptable, however, and will lead to a clearer relationship between mind and body.

A Seth Book - The Seth Material - anathology

"It was a personality fragment of your own. You were wishing for a playmate, and were jealous because your brother stayed so long with your father. Quite without knowing it, you materialized a personality fragment as a playmate."
—p.29

"At one time or another, all of us on my plane give such lessons, but psychic bonds between teacher and pupils are necessary, which means that we must wait until personalities on your plane have progressed sufficiently for lessons to begin. Lessons then are conducted with those psychically bound to us."
—p.40

"Seth also said that an inner part of each personality was aware of its relationship with its entity -- and that this portion did man's breathing for him and controlled those bodily processes that we consider involuntary."
—p.55

"Seth said that not only do we form our own reality now, but we will continue to do so after physical death, so it is of the utmost importance that we understand the connection between thought and reality."
—p.112

"Matter is continually created, but no particular object is in itself continuous. There is not, for example, one physical object that deteriorates with age. There are instead continuous creations of psychic energy into a physical pattern that appears to hold a more or less rigid appearance."
—p.114

"The actual material that seems to make up the object has completely disappeared many times, and the pattern has been completely filled again with new matter. Physical matter makes consciousness effective within threedimensional reality."
—p.114

"Matter of itself, however, is no more continuous, no more given to growth or age than is, say, the color yellow."
—p.114

"None of you sees the glass that the others see. Each of the three of you creates your own glass, in your own personal perspective. Therefore you have three different physical glasses here, but each one exists in an entirely different space continuum."
—p.115

"Now, Mark, you cannot see Joseph's glass, nor can he see yours. This can be proven mathematically, and scientists are already working with the problem, though they do not understand the principles behind it."
—p.115

"Suggestion is no more and no less than an inner willingness and consent to allow a particular action to occur; and this consent is the trigger which sets off the subconscious mechanisms that allow you to construct inner data into physical reality."
—p.120

"Mental enzymes are connected with the pineal gland."
—p.121

"The physical environment is as much a part of you, then, as your body."
—p.122

"When it is said that certain characteristics from a past life influence or cause present patterns of behavior such statements -- and I have made some of then -- are highly simplified to make certain points clear. The whole self is aware of all the experiences of all its egos, and since one identity forms then, there are bound to be similarities between them and shared characteristics."
—p.149

"The human being does not erupt into existence at birth and laboriously then begin its first attempt to gain experience, If this were the case, you would still be back in the Stone Age. There are waves of energy, and waves of reincarnational patterns, for there have been many Stone Ages on your planet, where new identities did begin their 'first' experience with physical existence..."
—p.156

"You must watch the pictures that you paint with your imagination for you allow your imagination too full a reign...You form physical materializations of these realities within your own mind. If you imagine dire circumstances, ill health, or desperate loneliness, these will be automatically materialized, for these thoughts themselves bring about the conditions that will give them reality in physical terms. If you would have good health, then you must imagine this as vividly as in fear you imagine the opposite."
—p.161

"For one thing, while pain is unpleasant, it is also a method of familiarizing the self against the edges of a quickened consciousness. Any heightened sensation, pleasant or not, has a stimulating effect upon consciousness to some degree. Even when this stimulus may be highly unpleasant, certain portions of the psychological structure accept it indiscriminately because it is a sensation, and a vivid one."
—p.169

"All illness is almost always the result of another action that cannot be followed through. When the lines to the original action are released and the channels opened, the illness will vanish, however, the thwarted action may be one with disastrous consequences which the illness may prevent. The personality has it's own logic."
—p.170

"each case of senility is different, but generally speaking, the personality transfers the vital parts of consciousness into the next area of existence, and is often fully aware there, and functioning."
—p.172

"Seth suggests that self-hypnosis and light trance states be used as ways to uncover inner problems that are causing us difficulty. He also suggests that we simply ask the inner self to make the answer available on a conscious basis."
—p.173

"In larger terms, there is no evil, only your own lack of perception..."
—p.179

"Energy projected into any kind of construction, psychic or physical, cannot be recalled, but must follow the laws of the particular form into which it has been for the moment molded."
—p.183

"...the physical universe itself is a conglomeration of diverse individualistic symbols, none of which means precisely the same thing to any two individuals, and in which even so called basic qualities like color and placement in space cannot be relied upon. You merely focus upon similarities. Telepathy could be called the glue that holds the physical universe in precarious position, so that you can agree on the existence and properties of objects."
—p.183

"Each dream object is actually double- or triple-decked, a symbol for other, deeper data."
—p.184

"Let us speak no more of a conscious or unconscious self. There is one self and it focuses its attention in various dimensions. In the waking state it focuses in physical reality. In the dream state it is focused within a different dimension."
—p.187

"I mentioned the Crucifixion...Not being a physical reality, it influenced the world of physical matter in a way that no purely physical event could."
—p.188

"When you are manipulating within physical reality, you have a fairly simple set of rules to serve you. Within dream reality there is greater freedom. The ego is not present. The waking consciousness, dear friends, is not the ego. The ego is only that portion of waking consciousness that deals with physical manipulation. Waking consciousness can be taken into the dream state; the ego cannot, as it would falter and cause immediate failure."
—p.191

"If you were aware of the constant barrage of telepathic communications that do impinge upon you, it would be most difficult for you now to retain a sense of identity."
—p.192

"When you dream of others, they know it. When they dream of you, you know it. There would be nothing to be gained, however, in conscious awareness of these conditions at this time."
—-p.193

"What is a probable self? According to Seth, each of us has counterparts in other systems of reality; not identical selves or twins, but other selves who are part of our entity, developing abilities in a different way that we are here."
—-p.195

"The 'I' of our dreams can be legitimately compared to the self that experiences probable events. Let us consider the following. An individual finds himself with a choice of three actions. He chooses one and experiences it. The other two actions are experienced also, by the inner ego, but not in physical reality...There is a constant subconscious interchange of information between all layers of the whole self."
—p.202-203

"Starting with the personality as we usually think of it, there is, after the operating ego, a layer of personal subconscious material. Beneath this is racial material dealing with the species as a whole. Beneath this, undistorted and yours for the asking, is the knowledge inherent in the inner self, pertaining to reality as a whole, its laws, principles, and composition."
—p.216

"...even as I can travel through other selves which I have known and which are a portion of my identity, and yet which are so beautifully unpredetermined, for you do not exist as completed personalities within my memory, but you grow within my memory."
—p.229

"Later, in your time, all of you will look down into the physical system, like giants peering through small windows at the others now in your position and smile."
—p.231

"This absolute, ever-expanding, instantaneous psychic gestalt, which you may call God if you prefer, is so secure in its existence that it can constantly break itself down and rebuild itself."
—p.237

"All that is knows no other. This does not mean that there may not be more to know. It does no know whether or not other psychic gestalts like It may exist. It is not aware of them if they do exist. It is constantly searching. It knows that something else existed before Its own primary dilemma when It could not express Itself."
—p.241

"Now in the same way do you give freedom to the personality fragments within you own dreams and for the same reason. And you create for the same reason, and within each of you is the memory of that primal agony -- that urge to create and free all probable consciousness into actuality."
—p.244

"Some personalities can be a part of more than one entity...Any personality can become an entity on its own." --p.245

"There is constant creation. There is within you a force that knew how to grow you from a fetus to a grown adult. This force is part of the God within you."
—p.246

"In other words All that is existed in a state of being, but without the means to find expression for its being. This
was the state of agony of which I spoke" "At first, in your terms, all of probable reality existed as nebulous dreams within the conscious of All that is..." "Had he not solved it, All that is, would have faced insanity, and there would have been, literally, a relity without reason and a universe run wild. The pressure came from two sources: from the conscious but still probable individual selves who found themselves alive in a God's dream, and from the God who yearned to release them."
